There is no point in spending your early-game points on melee units that can't reach enemy units unless you are very confident in your ability to keep them alive. The most important tactic is to get your ranged units into the thick of the battle as early as possible. The best early-game army build for all factions is arguably the one that allows you to get the most out of the game. So, while they are a strong choice for a play style with lots of building points, it can get a bit tricky to balance. While their ranged units, such as the Balefire and Black Robes, are particularly deadly, their tanks and melee units are inferior to the other races. The Dwarves are the most complicated of the early-game factions. They don't offer any unique tactics, but have decent spearmen and archers who don't need any special abilities.
The High Elves are the most generic of the early-game factions, consisting of cavalry, fighters, and bows. They are the fastest faction in the early-game, however, so they have to be countered carefully. The Dark Elves, on the other hand, seem to have a lot of hybrid units, with some of the best melee units in the game.
